The 11 Best Ways to Vacation for families on a budget

Spring Break doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank! Whether you're planning a getaway or looking for a fun staycation, there are plenty of ways to make unforgettable memories without overspending. Here are my top 11 budget-friendly spring break ideas to help you maximize fun while minimizing costs.

We travel a lot for our kids’ sports and know that teens are not cheap, so I am always looking for fun, inexpensive things to do with older kids that don't break the bank. Finding ways to save while still creating amazing experiences is key!

1. Plan a Staycation

You don’t have to leave town to enjoy a break! A staycation can be just as fun (and way more affordable). Book a night at a local hotel with a pool, visit nearby attractions you’ve never explored, or simply plan themed days at home with movie nights, DIY spa treatments, or backyard camping.

If you’ve been accumulating credit card points, now is the time to cash them in! Last year, my family of five took a trip to Hilton Head Island and stayed in a Homes & Villas by Marriott rental using our Marriott points—spacious, comfortable, and completely free! Check your rewards programs for flights, hotels, or rental cars to slash travel costs.  I am currently banking points with my Hilton American Express to plan a family vacation to Hawaii.

3. Road Trip Instead of Flying

Flights can quickly eat up a vacation budget, but there are plenty of incredible destinations within a five-hour drive of most major cities. Whether it’s a beach town, national park, or charming small town, driving instead of flying can save hundreds of dollars and give you more flexibility.

Eating out for every meal adds up fast. Instead, find a hotel with a kitchenette or an VRBO with a full kitchen. Order groceries ahead of time and have them delivered so you can cook some of your meals and save on dining costs.

5. Travel During Off-Peak Days

If your schedule is flexible, consider traveling midweek instead of on weekends. Flights and hotels tend to be significantly cheaper from Tuesday to Thursday compared to weekend rates.

6. Look for Free or Low-Cost Activities

Research free events and attractions at your destination. Many cities offer free museums, hiking trails, public beaches, and live music events. Check local tourism websites or social media pages for deals and discounts.

7. Pack Smart to Avoid Extra Expenses

Little expenses add up quickly—extra luggage fees, overpriced airport snacks, or forgotten essentials. Pack wisely and bring along snacks, reusable water bottles, sunscreen, and anything else you’d otherwise have to buy at a premium price.

For an adventurous and budget-friendly getaway, consider camping or renting an RV. National and state parks offer stunning scenery at a fraction of the cost of hotels, and you’ll get the bonus of quality family time unplugged from screens and distractions.

9. Group Travel for Splitting Costs

Traveling with another family or a group of friends can be a great way to cut costs. Renting a large vacation home and splitting the cost can be much cheaper than multiple hotel rooms. Plus, you’ll get more space and possibly a kitchen to help save on food expenses.

10. Plan Ahead and Set a Budget

Last-minute trips often cost more. Plan in advance, set a budget, and look for deals ahead of time. Sites like Expedia often run vacation sales. Apps like Hopper, Google Flights, and Expedia can help track price drops, while Groupon and TravelZoo offer discounted experiences and hotel stays. Plan trips up to a year in advance—failure to plan is planning to fail! Booking early can help you snag the best deals on accommodations, flights, and activities. I mentioned above but if you have a location in mind look into a credit card to get points.  The American Express card is known to be one of the best cards for earning points.

11. Use ChatGPT to Find Budget-Friendly Destinations

If you have a destination in mind, such as Florida, use ChatGPT to compile a list of the top locations to stay with reasonably priced hotels and things to do. Whether you're looking for a quiet beach retreat or a lively city escape, ChatGPT can help you find hidden gems, budget-friendly accommodations, and affordable activities tailored to your travel needs.

Vacations should be about relaxing and making memories, not stressing over expenses. With a little planning and creativity, you can enjoy a fantastic trip while staying within your budget. Where will your affordable spring break adventure take you this year? Let me know in the comments!
